Protests worldwide erupted on 10/7/2023 against Israel before they even fired one shot in retaliation.  And these protests would've been cheers of jubilation and joy had the power dynamic been reversed, and Israel was wiped off the map on that day. 

And seeing this same sentiment in this very thread here really blunts Netanyahu's words here. 

Israel lives in peace with neighbors who have chosen to live in peace with Israel (immediate neighbors are Jordan, Egypt, etc).

Meanwhile you have other regions like Iran, who share no borders with Israel, have no land disputes, and never faced direct attacks until just last year--who have waged 4 decades of proxy wars vowing Israel's complete and utter destruction. Funding strategic investments into Yemen, Hezbollah, Hamas, etc. 

Israel has more or less "tolerated" this world order for decades:

1. With Gaza in particular, they forcibly uprooted settlers to completely withdraw from Gaza in 2005. Even digging up and relocating the dead from Jewish cemetaries. This was done because they just wanted peace. 

2. In return, they got Hamas as the governing body and endless rocket attacks. Rocket attacks that had they been any other country on the planet, simply would've **utterly destroyed the enemy shooting them at you until it stops.** Instead, they "tolerated it", opting to invent more ingenious ways to cower (Iron Dome) and building bomb shelters in every building and home. They did all this more or less for peace. 

3. And what did this get them? A literal invasion across the border resulting in 1000+ dead, hundreds taken hostage, with vows that more will continue in the future. Meanwhile the world protested **Israel** on day 1.

4. Then the UN, which had for years ignored resolution 1701 and permitted/ignored the hezbollah military buildup at the border (to include entrenching rocket batteries, bunkers, and bringing in heavy excavation equipment to dig tunnels that led right into Israel, had nothing to say when Hezbollah immediately attacked as well (except to criticize Israel). 

Israelis have been brutalized by this enemy for decades. 

Netanyahu's words here are the result of the world turning a blind eye at best, or at worst encouraging/aiding its enemies these attacks. 

The only solution for peace is to ensure that Hamas physically doesnt have power anymore and is destroyed. The same people saying "dont conquer gaza city" also say "dont go to rafah" which is where Israel was able to locate and kill Sinwar.

Hamas bets they can finish the conflict keeping control in Gaza, in some way or another and increased influence in the WB. They keep the hostages to show that they still fight Israel. If they don't die, and the world pressures Israel to stop, or Israel chooses to stop - Hamas gets to say to Palestinians - we fought till the end and forced Israel to surrender.

Hamas doesn't care about bringing peace, or the safety of Palestinians - which is why they started this war to begin with.

Hamas are still hoping to trade the hostages in exchange for a ceasefire and withdrawal. If they give up the hostages they have literally nothing and they are at the full mercy of Israel, a country which has already destroyed all its hospitals, shot its medics and blow up aid centres. In the previous ceasefires Israel often kept killing civilians. In the West Bank, which from the Israeli perspective is “at peace”, the Palestinians suffer daily abuse and violence. Netanyahu made it clear, the hostages are not his primary goal. He’s going to continue the genocide, whether or not Hamas has hostages. Keeping the hostages, at least, creates problems for Netanyahu in Israel, which may, to some degree, slow the genocide. That’s a pretty flimsy reed to lean on, but it’s all they have. The problem is that Israel (specifically netanyahu and his right wing coalition partners) doesn't want the war to end, and so they're refusing a hostage deal that would involved an end to the war.

There are way more articles that mention this, and it's the main issue with the ceasefire talks. Hamas wants to exchange the hostages, but Israel will only accept them if it doesn't mean a permanent end to the war and Hamas disbands.

Hamas has offered on numerous occasions starting as early as October 2023, in return for the release of all Palestinian political prisoners (5,200 of them) and a ceasefire. 

Since then, hamas has offered to release all  hostages for various other ceasefire deals, but there is a lot of wordplay around what a ceasefire looks like from Hamas, Israel, and the U.S. Hamas stance generally is that they want Israel to stop (illegally) blocking the Gaza/Egypt border, pull all troops out of Gaza, and cease military operations in Gaza for a period of time. israel usually finds the first two conditions unacceptable, and if you peruse Israeli media you will see more extreme arguments where they will only accept a ceasefire that allows them to continue to militarily target Hamas (so…not a ceasefire).

So, yes, the refusal to return all the hostages is because of leverage and because  Hamas doesn’t believe that returning them would stop the military conflict or the genocide.

So there is a difference between limited verse unlimited goals. Both sides fundamentally only really care about getting the other group out of palastine. Both have their reasons which we don't need to touch on.

THe issue is you cant actually negotiate with someone with unlimited goals, they will always want more once you appeise them.

Hamas has made dozens of offers to do just that in exchange for permanent ceasefires, but Netanyahu turned all of them down since the hostages are less important to him than inflicting massive damage on Hamas and Palestinians in general - as well as giving him an option to prolong the war (he was in a bit of political trouble before the war started and would have been replaced had it not happened).

Why Hamas has not opted to just release all hostages anyway to gain the sympathy of the world (and probably some Israelis as well) is a question I can not answer.

Let me clarify on Sisi. I am not claiming he is a slave to the US. But his grip on power is largely dependent on the US. I have no doubts that  if the US or israel demanded of him some smaller policy changes that would largely fly under the radar he would comply in the instant like a good little puppy he is. Yes i do accept some numbers and not the others. Again i might be wrong but to me the context is different. It is widely accepted that the largest number of journalists are murdered in this conflict. Journalists are inherantly easier group to track, because their cowerkers will know if they are missing or not.  But that is not the situation for the rest of the population. Even in europe right now we have people who are born and live their lives with no documents for whom no one would notice if they went missing. Yes! If you watch the Bibi Files documentary they explain how Bibi sent millions (or billions?) of dollars of cash  in suitcases to Hamas. Nothing passes the checkpoints without Israeli permission. ALSO USAID 🇺🇸 funded Hamas &amp; Hezbollah as well as the Taliban and other Middle Eastern “terrorist” groups.

There is no way that one of the most secure, well-protected, and observed borders in the entire world was overrun for SIX HOURS with motorized para-gliders, excavators, and pickup trucks before anyone was able to send a message asking for help. We're talking about a country that can detect hobby drones miles from their own territory not noticing they were being attacked. We're talking about a border that has lasers, sensors, cameras, drones, automated turrets, and human beings constantly monitoring it somehow not noticing anything. Non-civilian military tech we don't even know about failed as well. You can say the excavators and trucks are bad but PARA-GLIDERS flying into Israel were somehow not seen by anyone who had a cellphone or radio? Not a single alarm or call made it to the IDF to let authorities know Hamas were attacking? 

I think it's highly likely that Israel let Hamas infiltrate the border and were hoping that they would kill more people. After five-six hours and not a lot of civilians deaths, Israel sent in the tanks and helicopters to kill it's own citizens to pump up the numbers.
